hey guys just wanting to know if 120y and 1200 autos are the same.

No, they are not exactly the same. But they are close enough to swap.

Older ones are air-cooled and have a grille on the bottom of the bell housing. Newer ones are water cooled, and require the radiator to have transmission fluid cooler fittings.

The bolt pattern, the bell housing, the gear box itself is the same

Datsun 1000 & earlier 1200's used the Jatco 3N71A trans while the later 1200's & 120Y's used the Jatco 3N71B.
What's the difference? Beats me.

Nearly every year something about the JATCO changed, sometimes a small change, sometimes a more significant change.

But they will interchange. You can use a newer one in older car etc.
