I've picked up an A15 engine with the hopes of dropping it in the 1200 wagon. It cames with a complimentry starter motor and gearbox.
The gearbox appears to automatic and for the sake of saving time and money, I was intending to go ahead and put both of them in the car.
As you can tell, I am a newby to all of this. Is there going to be any dire consequences for going ahead?

Any advice?

Is there going to be problem with the A15 being bolted straight onto the standard 1200 manual box? Will the bolt holes line up?

Cheers

1200 auto's came from the factory with a larger trans tunnel & they didn't do it for the fun of it, so I guess the trans will not fit. No luck there unless you do some serious floorpan surgery.

The original 1200 gearbox is the 56 series trans [replaced by the 56A in later models] This was only used behind the short stroke engines, which in Australia limits it to the A10, 1200 & A12 engines.

The longer stroke A14/15 engines develop a fair bit more torque, so the factory used the bigger & stronger 60 series gearboxes.
You can use the A15 in front of the smaller box, but as has been said, take it easy & use the pulling power of the engine in the higher gears rather than trying to smoke it off the line & it will last a long time.

Geta bit excited however, & you will be pushing it home pretty soon.

Some have found that the small manual gearbox will last behind an A15 if treated carefully.

Others have found, with careful treatment, broken teeth in the gearbox. Take the risk if you want to.

For converting, here are all the parts you will need (in addition to probable tunnel mods):
