hey everyone i need some help with engine choices for my 1200. could u give me some info about about sr20s, ca18s, rotories (12a or 13b) or if it would be better to just chuck in an a15 and stroke it up cos i want a performance engine but i can drive every day. so info on fuel economy, reliability, what i could get the most hp out of for cheapest, how much work it would need to go in, experience with the engines etc

thanks guys

That is a really big question mate, try the wiki on the menu, or the search box, most of the info is on here, you just got to find it...

I have an a15 in my ute and its worked, I love it, but there is no way I would have it as a daily driver, mainly because its to nice. I guess it all depends on how much you want to spend.

It really depends on your budget and what you want out of it.

A worked A series engine will be a lot cheaper than the other options but with something like twin 40's or 45's and a lumpy cam will use a bit of fuel and may also be a little less streetable than a completely standard CA18 but I'm sure there are heaps of people on here that have heavily worked A series engines and they'll tell you they're fine.

A CA18 conversion on the other hand will be a lot more expensive but will give you a heap more power heaps easier. Plus there will be lots more scope for power down the track and if kept fairly standard will be perfectly streetable.

You can forget about rotors or SR20's nowadays if you want it to be 100% legal. If you know of an engineer who is only worried about money you may get him to pass something but you'll need rego on it so you don't have to get it inspected. This is a dodgy way of doing things and if you get caught (which you probably will) after a while. You will then ll get massive fines and have to change everything back to standard again if you want it as a street car.

If You plan on having it as a drag car or similar than no worries, chuck whatever you want in it.

It all depends what you want out of it and how much $$$ you're willing to throw at it.

Mmmmmm, here in good old ZA you have to worry about neither, well ok, as long as you don't get caught speeding and your car is visible through the smoke it's belching from about 20 feet away...

You'd probably also be able to get a 1200 fitted with a twin turbo W16 VW engine roadworthied, that's if you could get the engine to fit within the confines of the car...

And what part of the world you live will also have a bearing on choices.

How do the CA18's compare in drivability to the A series? have never driven one...

I really love my worked a15 and wouldnt own a datto with anything but an a series, but its really up to personal choice.

Though I would love to have a drive of the other engine powered cars, to see how they compare...

It all comes down to what your budget is?!? try to stick to Nissan like the A or L series because there not so $$$. Also what are you going to the use the ute for??? work, play or day by day driving?!?

Yeah go and destroy another lovely classic car by putting something thats not even from a Nissan in there... (not to mention the engineering problems if you have to deal with them)
