the gearbox alone is probably worth that amount depending on the condition and model of it 60a 56a etc

Yep I'm interested too, but like datto1000wagon said, dependant on the condition and model it is probably worth more than that.... so to fetch an accurate price find out the details and a couple of pics would be good too (even if it still is in the car).

I disagree with the gearbox being worth that alone.
Perhaps if it was a 63a or it was a 60 series that had been rebuilt, and you really, really wanted it, but $1600 for just for a used gearbox is a bit steep.

I think the offer of 1600 for the package is realistic. It offers a reasonable deal for both parties. Check out the ebay one posted on here atm. Plus its an overdrive which is much more desirable for a street car.

Much more than the offered price and you would have to seriously consider a ca conversion, or are you just trying to talk up the price because you have one to sell?

There is no mention of the model of the box or the condition and we both say that $$ would depend on this.

Quite the opposite, I have every intention on getting one and the one on Ebay at the moment was bought by the seller with the intention to end up in my ute however as of unforeseen circumstances I don't have the money to buy it. If I did it may not have ended up on Ebay. I have also found another one for $1000, that doesn't even know what gear it is suppose to be in...

Try buying a 5 speed for a VW bug, a friend of mine told me there about $3000.

Why are the dogleg 5 speeds better then a normal pattern?? i have two of both 5speeds and i much prefer to use the normal pattern over the dogleg boxes.
