Is it common for the speedo drive in the G/box to Brake?

My speedo was making some noises, the needle bounced a few times then went to "0" & has stayed there. Upon investigation there was a slight kink in the cable, so I bought a new one. and it works fine on the speedo powered by a electric drill, but it won't move when connected to G/Box. How do you fix this?

I've broken one previously.
It's only a (10mm)? bolt to pull the speedo drive from gearbag to check it out, and the gears only made of plastic.
Probubly pick one up from the wreckers for nothing.
