well that saves the tunnel having to be removed and replaced with biggger one but you still have diff, brakes, skockes, tail sharft, gearbox mounts , engines mounts , fule tank to suit efi , radator , exorst , wiring , relocat the battiery , brake booster , ect ect then mod permits / rego so a lil ezyer but yea its still a long road
but why a sr20de youll get bored real quick go the turbo

The amount of trouble you have with the cops is entirely dependant on your right foot, your attitude, the company you keep & to some degree, the places you go. It will have nothing to do with your engine as you can find yourself in the gun with a stock 1200 if you aren't carefull.

also double check your rules. In Vic and NSW, I think it's illegal for p-platers to drive modified cars too.

I would also assess your funding and projected schedule for the car and then double it at least. You might find that realistically by the time you finish the car you will be off your p's and will be able to drive it!
That's what happened to me anyway. I bought my car at 18 and didn't register it until I was 22. I had always planned to finish it in 12months but due to all sorts of delays and distractions these things always blow out!
Just something to think about

Put an A15 + manual in it. Then upgrade later on if you feel the need.
barring that just put manual in it and some better suspension and a small front brake upgrade, you have heaps of fun and won't cost you much.
EDIT - sr20de is doable on a budget, but you really need mates that know how to wire stuff, and also have accumulated a ####load of spares to take some of the costs out (and hide them from the missus).
a guy named Richard put an SR20de into a stock 1200, take a look at teamshitbox.com I think the site was, don't think the pics are still there though.

10/10 is saved for the "ultimate" conversion. The RB26DETT 1200. but lets not get started on that again...
Yeah the ruling is that you can't drive a modified vehicle in VIC if you're on your ps depending how long ago you got them that is. If you got them before all this "arrive alive" crap then you are allowed to drive a vehicle with a power to weight ratio of 150kw/tonne or something... so given that a ute is 0.7 tonne you can have an engine that produces 105kw at the flywheel.
however if you are worried about police pulling you over, then i suggest consulting with an engineer before starting the work, as the police will notice that there is an SR20 under your bonnet and will pin you for changing your vehicles performance without engineers approval etc etc...
good luck with it. i personally think that an SR20DE has alot nicer note than its DET brother. A nice set of quad inlet trumpets, big cams, extractors and nice 2.5" exhaust and you'll leave most any commode or fulcken behind
