Hi all
After reading DD's 'Dream 1200' thread, was checking out the QR25DE engine specs and looking at the OZ nissan site to see if we have a QR25DE Navara, which it would appear that we don't.
What we do have is 2x4 YD25 turbo diesel Navara though! hmmm... having driven a BMW 525 turbo diesel in the UK (which went like stink, and got 43mpg) how good would 105kW and 310Nm of torque be in a 1200??? Removed from pushing 2 tonnes of Navara around, how good would the economy be??
I know it sounds kinda crazy, but if it could fit, a 2.5L turbo diesel 1200 could be a real weapon with outstanding economy to boot.
Does anyone know the legalities of changing fuel types from petrol to diesel in OZ? ie. is it allowed at all, or would it be completely out of the question?

I never looked twice at a turbo diesel let alone just a diesel until I Drove a neighbours Bt50 the power was strong and it had lots of torque.
If this conversion was possible it would be a great and would really haul ass with a12 or better economy.
someone should really look into it.

Diesel would be completly out of the question. they are made of cast iron and are heaps heavier than their petrol counterparts. anyone who has complained about a sr20 datsun1200 being too heavy would know what im talking about. and the sr20 is alloy!!

yes weight would certainly be up - hadn't thought of that.
Looking at the specs.... it does have a cast iron block with an alloy head, so would it really be much heavier than a turbo KA24DE conversion?
Tried to search for engine weights, but as diesels aren't really common for conversions, they're a bit hard to find :)

If you expand your horizons & look further afield for siitable diesel engines I feel sure that a suitable candidate will be found. Don't wory too much about a small increase in weight as there are several L20B powered 1200's that seem to have survived the transplant. It's OK with a modest weight increase, but a big one just makes it drive like a pig.
If the diesel provided a reasonable performance in a similar weight, or heavier weight car, then it will go very nicely in a 1200 [or similar] & lets face it, very few people install diesels with the expectation of tyre shreding performance.
If you can identify a suitable diesel engine, then go for it, you may just be the pioneer of a whole new wave of inovation in this world of dwindling oil reserves.

Remember the old Isuzi iMark sedan with diesel? That was a good, light engine.

The QR25DE is available in the X-trail. This means they should be available from late model 4x4 wreckers. I just wonder if the QR20 was sold in any X-Trails. This would make them eligible for improved production. Or you could get a QR25DD & turbo charge it, & still run over 3 litre.

Would it be possible to get a late model Nissan Micra, fit the 1.8 litre motor from a Tiida & then turbocharged it? Your answer must include parts numbers for the conversion. You have 12 months. Commence.

unfortunately to be IPRA eligible, the engine must be from a touring car. 4x4s, SUVs and commercial vehicles are not touring cars.
