hey
just wonderin a couple of things
i have a ca18det goin in my ute (its in just getting things sussed)
i have a carter black lift pump, 044 bosch fuel pump the engine will be mostly stock to begin with but will want to improv it later down the track (turbo, computer etc) so my questions are

1. what size surge tank should i use (atm im thinkin 2 ltr (will be making it at home))

2. why do lots of ppl run the return line to the surge tank wouldnt it be better to go to the fuel tank again so the fuel can cool down more?

thanks
Tom

1.5 to 2 litre should be fine.

and your right, returning fuel to the fuel tank would be the preferred method.

i think often fuel is returned to the surge tank to avoid modding the fuel tank to accept another return.

im not too sure mate

but even if you could use the breather to return it...

what would you use as a breather?

you really shouldnt use the breather as i tried this and the fiitings are just too small, i found that the pressure became all fuked up on the carby setup, but then again i havnt tried it since changing to efi

I thought returning to the surge tank would be a better idea as that ensures the surge tank is always full, you overflow from the surge tank into the fuel tank....

I'm going to run my surge tank overflow into the breather - I assume it's a 6mm pipe, will find out tomorrow.

I've got a 500mL EFI hardware surge tank, which I think will do the job, I can't forsee needing more than that.

Try not to have the return giong back into the swirl pot. People generally do this if their pre pump is not large enough to garentee the pot stays full.

What this does is circulate the fuel in a loop from pot to engine bay and back heating it up.

It would be ok for a cruiser. but if you need all the anti detonation bits working for you i wouldnt recomend it..

So it sounds like I'd be better off returning to the fuel tank.

My surge tank has 4 outlets, so I guess the surge tank manufacturers were assuming using a very poor lift pump.

4 is 1 EFI feed, 2. lift pump in, 3 fuel rail return in, 4. surge tank overflow...

I can see how the fuel would heat up.

What would be the best way to block off a outlet from a surge tank (fuel rail return)....unless I'm better off getting another one.

yea well your using the same setup as me more or less mildman.... i think. carter black and bosch 044?
im sure there is something you can easily use to block up the other one.
and you only have a small surge tank so im sure it wont have any trouble staying full :P

Thanks for everyones help
Tom
