12mths on 1 point is a piece of piss. No offence but people who can't control themselves for such a short time deserved to be kicked off the road.

That system is the old one we had in NSW (or similar). When I lost my licence back in 2000 I faced three months or probationary single point. On probe you had to maintain that point for twelve months (even if you gained points back) or face an auto 12mth ban. I sailed through and haven't been booked since.

For me that period of extra care showed what a dickhead I had been and gave me much more respect for my driving priveleges. Honestly, what's better, driving your datto like a grannie for a year or catching the bus for 3mths?

Well if had a car with a acurite speedo i would be alright i guess. Thats what all my fines are. But ive been good since i lost 4 at once in january. My landcruiser(no longer daily anyway) has 4" oversized tyres and soon to cop reduction gears... 80kmh on the speedo is about 100. And the datto... well who knows?

Agree totally....

I'm currently on the 12mth good behavior period, I only ever got done for little bits, they just added up over the years, always speeding offences. A few months before I got the last two fines I decided that I didn't want to drive like that anymore, the next fine was me being stupid and speeding, then next was unfortunate in that it was a 100kmh that went to a 50kmh and I got done at 62kmh as I was slowing down...

I grew up in the country and its hard to slow down when you been doing it all your life, but I'm more than happy driving like a grandpa now and it also makes the girlfriend happy...

I do feel your pain with the datto's speedo.

My Patrol has 33" tyres and I never get booked. simple maths told me that's roughly 6% increase (33/31=1.0645), so about :
94kph indicated = 100kph actual.

assuming you have 35s, that's as good as 13% increase (35/31=1.129 or 12.9% increase) so 100kph/1.129 = 88.5kph speedo indicated. Keep the needle just under 90 and you'll be right in the 100 zones.

changing diff ratio, exactly the same principle applies. eg if you go from a 4.1 to 4.4 diffs, that's a 7.3% reduction (4.4/4.1=1.073). your speedo would show you going 7.3% faster than you actually are, or with your 13% bigger tyres, you error is now 12.9 - 7.3 = 5.6%, so divide by 1.056.

or if you want to correct your gearing change caused by the bigger tyres, multiply your existing diff ratio by 1.129 for the diff ratio you need. EG current diff 4.1 * 1.129 = 4.6.

with your datsun, either drive alongside a mate with a modern car and reasonably accurate speedo and note what the reading is, or book a quick run on a dyno. cheaper than speeding fines.
