Saw a thread on batteries...leading me to this question.

What was the standard CCA (Cold Cranking Amps) required for a CA18DET.

I'm trying to size up the ideal Odyssey battery.

use a motor bike battery if its only for cranking over... small dry cell even will do, deep cycle one for sitting for long periods

It looked like most people on the Silvia type forums (I found when googling CCA CA18DET) are in around the 500CCA.

I checked the workshop manual - that didn't specify (well where i could find it) a CCA recommended to crank the engine.

All it has to do is crank the engine, then run the EFI system, wipers & lights I guess.

It's a race car (with no stereo) - was thinking about an Odyssey 250CCA battery....was wondering how much amperage is really needed to start the car.

EDIT: Just saw your post Mik, so a deep cycle motorbike might do the trick. I just want one that doesn't need a battery box - the car had a battery box in it - but I need to move it to fit the surge tank...at which point it broke into a million (well at least 3 pieces).

I figure the better solution is to get a battery that doesn't need a box.

im using 250cca and it strugles to crank the datsun over after sitting for a few days in the cold, but would be fine if disconected and hooked up when driving or have a trickle charger.

Hmmm maybe a little more is the go...I have a kill switch in the cabin - so the battery will be disconnected when not in use.

300CCA might be required - as I have to run two fuel pumps, ignition, injectors and whatever else under cranking

EDIT: Just found this....

Input Parameters Are the Following:

* Engine CID = 110
* Number of Cylinders = 4

Computation Results:
# Computed CCA is 220.

I reckon it's totally dependant on the condition of the starter motor and the compression ratio of the engine.

I use the small odyssey PC680.

PC 680MJT Specs:

* 680 cranking amps for 5 seconds
* 595 cranking amps for 10 seconds
* 525 cranking amps for 20 seconds
* Short circuit current over 1800A
* 17 amp hours
* 25 minute reserve capacity with 25amp load
* With metal jacket and automotive terminals
* Length 7 1/4"
* Width 3 1/8"
* Height 7 3/8" to top of terminal
* Weight 16 lbs

The PC680MJT looks the goods. I rang Battery World and they also suggest a brand called Pulse - a cheap chinese knock off of Odyssey.

All I could get on the web was their brouchure - their website is down.

http://www.solarnewcastle.com.au/media/pulse_brochure.pdf

Don't seem to have quite the juice by $100 cheaper.

The Pulse PHB400 does 407 cranking amps for 5 seconds...quite a bit less - hmm seems the extra $100 would be worth it.

autobarn sell pulse..

ur alternater charges the battery anyway, so u shouldnt need a big one,

my ca18 has no cold start and it starts straight away and i drive it like twice a month..

the only reason battery #### them self from starttin if lift is coz the cold weather does sumshit to the terminals on the inside.. u can buy a product from supercheap for 9bucks which stops the corrioson ####..
