Just wanted to get some opinions on strut insert selection. My car is basically going to strictly be used for drag racing, I bought the Aerospace brake kit from O&J performance, and have the coil over kit, just need to decide on inserts. I was leaning towards the Bilstein Golf inserts. But I didn't find anywhere if people like them or not. The car is about 4 inches off the ground so modifying the strut tube, for length or what ever doesn't really matter. Any opinions are welcome.

I looked into using the bilstein inserts for a Mk1 Golf. I decided against the bilsteins as they are valved for "touring" type driving and not sports. These inserts were the OEM replacement items. Bilsteins are great shocks and Im sure a sports variant of the Golf inserts can be found.

I ended up going with the KYB item. KYB361005

i went the 280zx strut route. if you already have the brakes, then using them on the 280zx strut tubes shouldn't be a problem. my struts use an adjustable kyb insert from a 240sx. having camber plates and coilovers makes it all work very well. the strut tubes were shortened too, it goes from low to really low. an effective strut tower brace is good too, like the cusco one, the other ones don't really do anything useful other than interfere with the aircleaner... the cusco one does too, but they don't expect you to be using the stock aircleaner.

downside... 280zx struts tubes and nuckles are pretty heavy.

benefits... more braking power than you will ever need. cheap racing pads, adjustable everything, many spring rate options, strong enough for a ka24 or other heavy engine.

it's also the easiest to get up and working. i built it all on a bench and bolted it on in a parking lot.

Are you talking compression/rebound? Most of the drag cars that i've worked on have a fully adjustable coilover set up, does bilstien list the valving with the insert?

I've been using Koni coilovers SPA1 90/10 , that were meant to fit a toyota hilux/tundra but were tweeked by the local koni guys to fit on my ute, running 185lbs springs at the mo (drag race only setup) which still seem a touch hard. Can't say there is a great difference between them and the "stock" gas shoxs with lighter springs I used to run, but then again we run on an unprepared (non-tracbite coated) surface here.
