As topic says, i'm going to change the timingchain on my b110's a12 for a new one, and therefor need some good advice on what not to do and how to do it right!

So if anyone has a few good pointers i'd really appreciate it!

Thanks

Here's my advice:

1. Don't change it. They rarely go bad. However, if after measuring, it doesn't meet specs, then by all means change it

2. Get out a repair manual and read up on the process. The Factory Service Manual, Greogory's, Haines, etc are all equally good for timing chain. Photocopy or scan a print a copy of the specs page and the alignment diagram and tape it to the bonnet while you do the job

well, the reason for me wanting to change it is that there is a weird rattling sound over a narrow part of the rev range, low down in first and second and higher up in 3 and 4, it appears only for a few seconds of acceleration/ decelleration beginning of like a low vibration then over to a high ratling sound and then it dissapears again.

yes, it could be the timing chain. Inspect the auto-adjuster to see if there is a problem. It may need an initial adjustment, then it will be fine. Or the chain could be stretched, which is not common with the A-series but has happened before.

I have seen a couple of single link timing chains on A12's before. Wierd. The rattle is usually a trait of a stretched timing chain. Pinging has also often been mistaken for timing chain rattle.

'Pinging' is a term used for 'pre ignition' referring to the timing being over advanced at intervals. This can be caused by the distributor mechanical advance failing to return on it's own or even too much play in the rotor button. Rarely the button. As DD pointed out the timing chain rarely fails on an A series. It doesn't mean that they never do though.

I think on Page 5 of the A14 Prep links on my site I checked the timing chain.

EDIT: Also page 6 is timing chain installation
