Hey there, when I got my 120y insured, they always ask if it GL or Deluxe, how do you tell and what is the difference as I've never heard anyone else mention it.

hmm okay, i'll have to have a look. But from a sales point of view when they were new, what features were different. I heard that some had airconditioning.

Aircon, LOL, yeah, right. Aircon was not an Australian model 'factory option'. If you wanted aircon, & lets face it, if you could afford that, why were you buying a 120Y, then it would have been an aftermarket fitment.

Dealers could arrange to have it fitted to a new car, or the new car buyer could have it fitted after taking delivery.

The old York two cylinder compressors, when used, sucked a fair bit of power to run them & even 6hp represented nearly 10% of the MAXIMUM power output of the A12 engine.

The presence of aircon in a 120Y in Australia is not an indicator of its model level.

Again, the vinyl top was not a factory fitting in Australia, however some were fitted onto cars in the NSW distributor's showroom models.
Capitol Motors often tarted up some showroom stock & this would normally be done on the better models, but for the life of me, I don't know what the nice model was called in the 120Y range.

I do not know if Vinyl tops were fitted to cars by distributors in other states but it's very unlikely that they were done at a dealer level in rural areas. If a vinyl top was specifically ordered by a rural new car purchaser, the top would be added to a new car in Sydney which would then be sent off to the dealer. These tops were made to Capitol Motors specs & were not factory items.

I have one of these tops on my 1000 coupe & it looks better styled than the factory KB10 offering as did most of the tops done by CapMo.

Alright, alright, now ya made me go & get my factory workshop manual.
This has an explanation of the model codes.

This code applies to Aussie spec, but Japan produced model B210/120Y cars.

The sample code in the book goes like this. ... K B 2 1 0 S T R X ..... & this is the breakdown

K= Coupe model V= Van model. No character= Sedan model.

B210= Car model.

S= Standard model. No character= DeLuxe model.

T. In this position, A= Auto trans, No character= Manual Trans T=Floor shift control [I assume that T= floor shift auto.]

R= Two door.

X= Destined for Australia.

I do not have the separate book for the Aussie assembled sedans from July 1976, so the code here is unknown to me.

I hope that this helps.

Knowledge? Nah, not really, but I'm old enough to remember my stepfather selling 1000's new from his Datsun dealership. I was 24 when the first of the 120Y's were new & I worked not far from CapMo. They had about a half mile [well it felt like it] street frontage onto Parramatta Rd & what must have been a zillion cars on the lot. I remember the cars well as the low cost 120Y was a big seller & plenty were kept on hand at all times.

The only thing, knowledgewise, that I really need is a passable memory, & the knowledge of where to find my factory manuals, handbooks, owners manuals, advertising literature, brochures & accessory brochures. With these, anybody can be a bloody expert.
