The way to wire a amp meter is easy...you just need to wire it in series with the + ou - terminal cable that goes from the alternator to the battery...

Never plug in parallel!! Always in series....

So this is what you do...disconect the alternator + cable...or cut it in between...hook up the side of the alternator cable to one side of the amp meter and conect the battery cable half to the other terminal in the amp meter...

Let me sum it up...i didnt explain it well...

Your amp meter is like a bit of cable...imagine you have a positive wire....that charges you battery...it goes from the alternator to the battery straight...now imagem you cut that cable in half...you open the circuit...if you hook up each half to each side of te ammeter, you will be closing the circuit...and all current that flows from the alternator will show on the amp meter...

If you still dont get it...read about connecting stuff in "SERIES"...and you'll get the picture...that is how i hooked up mine im my 120Y...

Peace...hope i helped....

ps: here is a pic...i took it off the net...is not in no car...just and example how to connect this...the ampmeter is in series, the volt meter in parallel...maybe it will explain it better...

The Ammeter should be wired in so it reads ALL current flow INTO and OUT OF the 12V Storage Battery, EXCEPT the current drawn by the Starter Motor.
There is a heavy gauge cable that connects the 12V Battery + terminal to the High Tension terminal of the Starter Motor.
Leave that as it is, it supplies the heavy current to the Starter Motor and the Ammeter can not handle that!
From the Starter Motor or Battery + terminal, there is another smaller gauge cable that supplies power to the car when the engine is not running and receives a current when the engine is running and the Alternator is charging. That is the cable that you connect the Ammeter in series with.
Remember, an Automotive Ammeter only shows the current being DRAWN from the 12V Battery, i.e. DISCHARGE, or the current being SUPPLIED to the Battery, i.e CHARGE.
It DOES NOT show the TOTAL current load that the cars electrics are drawing.
This current can be considerable but is not relevant to the state of the storage battery and that is the device that has to crank and start the engine next time you turn the key.
Providing the Ammeter needle shows a deflection to the + or CHARGE side of ZERO when the engine is running, the 12V battery should be getting sufficient charge to perform the start up next time.
