Is there a negative to using an A12 distributor on an A14? What about the mechanical advance? It's what came with the car, but I could probably easily get one for an A14, but is it necessary?

Id put my guess on the a12 mech advance having a different curve to the a14 one.
In saying that, the a14 should run and drive fine with the a12 distributor, assuming its all working as it should however.
If it was me and it was only a daily id prob just run the a12 distributor...

It's fine. Most A14s have an emission-control power-robbing curve (USA models). The A12 one is slightly better for performance.

Just make sure it doesn't ping at light throttle around 2000 rpm. If so, back timing down. If not, move it up two degrees.

Just wondering, because someone told me that I would need to start looking at modifying my mechanical advance curve after the GX head and SU's are installed on the A14 to get the most out of the setup.

This leads me to one big problem, what is the signs that this needs to be done. Pinging comes to mind, what else?
I'm from SA, hell I even wonder if there is some tuning shop that can do something like that, or do I start to get the info on a DIY method.

I'm thinking of taking it to a Dyno shop and ask them to run it and give me some info and advise on the timing and take it from there.

There are no symptoms if the curve is not right. Pinging is only a problem if overadvanced. If underadvanced a little you cannot tell by driving it.

The stock advance curve is pretty decent. But read what one magazine did for the Datsun 1200: Supertune Datsun 1200

Does anyone now what the kit consist of, or what other dizzy springs can be used in the A-Series dizzy to achieve this advance closer to peak.
