hi ppl

has anyone used / bought a sleeve kit??
to convert the 120y strut to a coilover. If you have what size spring was used??

ground control make an awsome one.
Run a 250lb spring on the street and its more comfy than mates completely factory ae86/lots of other cars.

I think the 120Y uses a small diameter strut tube like the 1200, and the more popular kits are designed for the bigger L-series struts from 180B, Stanza, Z-car etc.

See if MadDat make the smaller diameter kits for 120Y.

I used the Maddat ones on 180B struts, and they work great.

The maddat kits use a standard 65mm (inner diameter) spring that easily purchased from many spring suppliers like King Springs at $80-$120 each.

On my front struts with my CA18, I'm now using 250pd/inch springs at 200mm long with helper springs all from king springs. I originally had 200pd (200mm) springs, and with the car lowered to a reasonable height the car would bottom out if I hit any sort of bump in the road.

It's possible that 60mm (inner diameter) springs are used on the 1200-like strut kits, so don't buy the springs before buying the kit.

Installing the kits take a bit of thought, as some springs will have a bit of 'sag' and you need to weld the spring adjusters in a spot where you can both raise and lower the car when needed.

I recommend tacking the threaded tube onto the strut with 4 spot welds and installing the struts before committing to the position on the strut. A quick roll up and down the drive way will allow the spring to settle in, and you'll know if the position on the strut looks ok. You also need to worry about tyre clearance too, as sometimes the threaded part will rub on the tyre.

Obviously before going for a test drive, you'd need a few more spot welds, or completely weld the threaded tubes into place.
