So I've been having a bit of a breather now that I'm back in Aus and out of work (lots of beer.....given up on the VBs though, taste like crap all of a sudden).

I've noticed the Patrols here are cab chassis and don't seem to have the big trays.

Here is a picture of my Patrol that I had up in PNG, see the tray? I think they're tops.

If I ever get a Patrol ute here I'd import one of these trays and bolt it on. What do the Patrol fans think? Reuben?....

I'll try and get some more pics.

Sprinkle some volcanic ash on it and it'll taste familiar again???

In your photo I see a red Datsun pickup with "Nissan" tailgate. Doesn't a Patrol look like this?

Looks like it could be a GU even (GQ pictured above).

Well-bodys look like their off a different car on the Pootrols. A good semi customed tray looks better IMO... Depends what your using it for really. My current 60series kinda ended up looking like a duel cab ute well body and it looked alright... Then i cut 500mm out of it and the tail lights are inline with the back of the 37" tyre

i dont like the tubs on the GU's either! the lines arent right for the body and dont line up very well, however they do look better than those big crapy alloy trays, but im a big fan of tidy little tube trays. theres some realy nice choped up GU wagons in aus. ive allways wanted a swb gu.. but sadly only a hand full of them here in oz and rumors of only couple regoed!!

My patrol

I am not a fan of the well body/tubs on a cab chassis weather it be a patrol, cruiser, hilux or any other cab chassis.

You pretty dont get tubs here in australia as a steel drop side tray is much more pratical than the tub design, particurly with a high 4wd, but thats a personal thing really.

DD, you pic is a GQ Patrol SWB, where as I think the red one is a GU cab chassis.

And and yeah I would go a GU SWB, but they are an import thing only from Japan, and they onlu made them upto series II I believe (2001-2004 i think).

Ahh but the big factor is: in PNG it is legal to ride in the tray. So deep tub trays are actually safer (of-course riding in the tray is oh so safe).

I have ridden in one of those aluminium flat trays and it was f'in scary with the shallow sides (driver wasn't too great either). I was also rattled by the noise of the flat-trays, the roads are shocking where we are.

I think the patrols here lose their 'heavier' look with the tiny trays......a bit like a bull with a tu-tu on.....

Fair enough on the riding in the back call, but I guess for me its something i grew up with, so dont see it as a danger, ie the risk is acceptable.

On and keep away from the aliminium trays. Steel is the only way to go. Yeah its heavier, but it takes the punishment that you buy a ute for better.

At the end of the day, its really a preference thing. 99% of Australian delivered Patrol utes come with an after market steel tray, even back to G60 days and thats mostly i think caus the geuinne nissan well body tray is more expensive than a steel drop side tray.

I would hazzard a guess and say that in PNG where the aftermarket tray industry is small if at all, it makes more sense for car importers to include a tray from the factory as its just eaiser. The ute is ready to rolll from the showroom floor.

Here you have to buy the ute first, then wait a week while they send it away to get a tray made for it.
