Hi all,
Just wondering if someone can help me out here. I have just fitted a Pertronix 1741 electronic ignition kit to my A14 (as the dizzy's points were screwed, and points tick me off to no end). I followed the excuse for an instruction as best as I could, even double checked it with others on the web who'd fitted the same kit.
Now if I connect the dizzy earth wire to the tab on the vacuum advance thingo, it stalls and will not start. Previously this wire was connected to the tab that was where the wires for the Pertronix kit feed through. Whilst I can get the car to start without this wire connected, I lose my tacho as a result (I have the 1200 coupe dash fitted).
It ticks me off as I tend to drive by my tacho, and not by my speedo, which is highly inaccurate, it's about 4-5 kms out at 80km/h, but when I'm doing 130km/h by the speedo, I'm actually just doing 110km/h.
Also with these Pertronix kits, would it be worth it to look into a capacitor discharge ignition (CDI)? It's only a street car, but usually gets driven pretty hard.
Thanks,
Chris

Connect red wire to + side of coil, connect both tach lead and black wire of pertronix to - side of coil. good luck.

Thanks, will look into that over the weekend. At the moment, I'm still having issues with the thing. It's still not running right, I've checked the leads, cap, rotor and coil and all seem to be ok. Will need to check plugs next, as I didn't think of checking or replacing them seeing as the motor was running when I bought it from the wrecker.
Better yet, I'll just buy some new plugs. It's not that much for a set anyway. Just thinking, seeing as I now have an electronic dizzy setup, would I be better off with using a slightly wider plug gap?

Wider plug gap is only used with hotter coil. So it depends on which coil you have.

Thanks again. Anyways, I bought new plugs for it and set the gap at 1.0mm (0.040"). It currently has a Bosch GT40R coil (still with ballast resistor), and is now running beautifully with timing just set by ear at present, as my mate still has my timing light.
As for my tacho, I still need to re-wire it, but that can wait for night time as it's about 45 degrees outside still. Damn this heatwave!! I could be working on my datto instead of farting around with my netbook!
