That's the idle control. Sure it needs it if you are running a factory ECU. The pipe you are pointing at, supplies air to this unit to bypass the throttle body, and keep the car idling.

The green one is essential for cold idle and protecting against stalling. The blue one is a on/off think for raising the idle when the A/C is turned on.

The car can be tuned without this stuff, in places like queensland, where the temperature doesn't change much.

maybe.. It does seem a bit of a waste to not hook these things up.

The engine will run without these things. I know of people who remove them and adjust the throttle butterfly open a little. This means you need to adjust the black box on the side to compensate for the change in angle from original idle.

The AAC valve (green one) is the thing that allows a lazy datsun driver with a 3.9 diff to roll around in 4th gear even in traffic

The ECU changes both idle and ignition advance to keep the engine running when under load at idle.

I'd like to add that calling out "Kev Rowley made this" when you are asking a question that you assume is going to point to a potential issue is somewhat unfair. I know Kev has email and given that he made the harness and probably knows more about the connections than anyone on this forum (based on the number of harness he does alone...noting he is not a mechanic), I would think the most appropriate course of action would be to ask the man himself?
Perhaps there is a perfectly suitable answer, where upon you might in fact be in error? Or a simple solution he can offer.
Point being, give the guy the benefit of the doubt and deal with him, if you don't get satisfaction then come on here and ask. I think all of us would prefer that if we were in Kev's shoes...despite knowing he doesn't read this site.
