Hey guys so the diff went in my 1200 ute today... Still drives but is clunking, so anyways I am after a new diff. The ute is ca18det powered and only has 150ponies and the moment but is only running the standard ecu and 6psi, am planning on running some bigger power numbers in the near future... So I am just after some guidance to which diff to go for? Obviously it has to be able to hold some decent power and I dont want a single wheeler

Cheers
Dan

The horsepower doesn't matter -- it matter how much torque you have. Of course generally when you have more HP you also have more torque, but it depends on the RPM.

A 1.8 turbo with 150HP probably has what? Less than 200 lb. ft torque?

Quote:
Strength of Differential -- Torque Rating
diff inches max. torque capacity
H145 5.71 ~100 lb. ft.
H150 5.91 ~125 lb. ft.
H165 6.50 ~225 lb. ft.
H190 7.49 ~285 lb. ft.
R200 7.88 ~300 lb. ft.
Ford 8 8.00 ~325 lb. ft.
Ford 8.8 8.80 ~500 lb. ft.
Ford 9 9.00 ~600 lb. ft.

See Rear Axle Swaps

A Datsun 411 H165 or Datsun 320 H190 axle assembly can be fitted on the cheap. They are narrower than a 1200 assembly if I recall correctly. See Diff Widths

Hey mate can you please give me a little more info on the setup you are going for? You going to use the skyline brakes ect... And any idea of the cost? PM me if you prefer...

R31 skyline diff, same basic diff as what you find in vn-vs commodores

needs to be shortened 155mm to be stock 1200 width, use the original short axle as the new long axle and you only have to get the original long axle cut down

yes you use the stock r31 rear disc brakes

can get ratios from 3.08-4.11

LSDs are the same as the ones used in v8 commodores

can buy a bolt in unit from maddat for around $2500

think i got quoted around $1000 to get an r31 diff shortened and new mounts welded on

wreckers want around $200 for a complete r31 diff with open centre, $350-400 for one with an LSD

ive got one cut down, just need to get around to welding mounts onto it and getting the axle cut down. but i'll be wanting around $1000 for it once its done
its just an open centre with 3.7 gears
