O.k to start this is a 16 valve 4AGE in an 87 model AE82 hatchback.
Anyone know if there's a simple reason why my motor is blowing smoke( Injector ??) seems to mainly be light grey ? The car has plenty of power actually goes real well. Only thing is it does idle inconsistently it jumps up and down. Also the tappet cover gaskets are leaking (yes theres 2)but i wouldn't think that was the cause. Any help or suggestions greatly appreciated.

Dizzy's are common for binding up internally causing erratic running. Grey smoke usually has a blue tinge to it. Hold the rpm steady at around 2500 to 3000 rpm and monitor the smoke. If smoke is consistant at that rpm after about 30 seconds then the rings are gone.

compression rings u/s pressurising crankcase and pushing oil out seals /gaskets

Nah all good had a blocked tappet cover breather pipe thingy. Now just has black smoke needs tune.

it will probably block up again real quick tho. take the oil fill cap off when its running and it will probably be breathing really badly. Some motors like often the oldest mazdas 626 or 929 2.0L rwd would seem to have plenty power but similarly shagged.
