The compression for my sunny's A14 engine follows as Cylinder 1: 125, Cylinder 2: 75, Cylinder 3: 100 and cyclinder 4: is at 120. Note that the car runs fine as is.

I whiped the head of it and from what i can see i cant find any blow out marks on the head or block. Looking underneath the head the valves dont seem to be damaged, they sit fluch to the head have no punctures or damaged edges. Any advice on what my problem is? could it just be the head gasket?
thanks

Piston rings?

The valves may look flush but it'd be worth while lapping them or getting them seated professionally.

i also forgot to add that the car viciously back fired, that prompted me to do the compression test.

Is there excessiv blow buy? I had this problem in 2 a15's and in both cases the second from the fron piston was cracked.

Wait for a second opinion but in my experience (which is limited) blow-by is the term given to the compression lost via piston failure or piston ring degradation. I think the valve sleeves (if the valve stems are worn excessively) could also be a port of compression loss too.

With regard to the back-firing, this could simply be the timing? Perhaps get everything timed nicely and then adjust your tappets to the specified gaps. This may help.

Still get a good look at piston number two. I'd say your rings are on the way out.

Pop a new gasket on too when you do get to it.

Test your valves this way:

1. With head off the engine, set it upside down. Combustion chambers facing up.

2. Fill each chamber with water, enough to completely cover the valve heads.

3. Let sit overnight, or a couple of hours.

If any water leaks out (down into the ports), the valves need relapping or re-grinding.

Sorry thread jack.

So that excess oiley smoke from the breather is the gases that have leaked from the piston into the case and back up throught the pushrod galleys?
