that is called drifting they intentionally get the car sideways its quite a big thing in japan and aus and i believe it hasnt quite caught on over your way although ive heard they are trying to promote it a bit over there
anyway they set the car up for sideways action and try to get the most speed and sideways action through the corner then the person behind is spose to imitate and get as close to the first drifter

I saw a movie last week called "Tokyo Drift". It was the same plot as Karate Kid, but with sliding cars...didn't make too much sense but the special effects were good.
