Hey all,
not real familiar with diffs or dattos for that matter, but when driving my 120y 4speed every gear change there is a loud DOOF that resonates through the boot to the hole car, i have come to the conclusion that it is a "loose" diff.. is there a way to tighten these or is it just wearing out, do i need a new diff? or can i get this opne fixed cheaply.. car is 100% stock... besides exhaust

Could pay to check your tailshaft universal joints.

They are not a replaceable uni, so you wont be able to do it yourself if thats the problem, a driveshaft shop would need to do it.

any chance you are using lowering blocks? If you go far enough, you place the front of the pinion/yoke closer to the floorpan, and the thicker/higher the blocks are the more it allows the springs to flex/wrap up, it might actually be the pinion hitting the floor pan (if none of the other stuff fixes it, that would be the next place to look)

Best you get under the car and have a look, you shouldnt have too much trouble telling if its a uni or not if its as noisy as you say.

My money is also on the back uni,$120 for this work is cheap,as they will have to cut the tail off the tail shaft and re weld a new(servicable) end back on,balance the new shaft and re fit it.Average price for this work on the Goldie is normally around $220 plus remove and re install if you don't do it yourself.

These genuine Datsun tailshafts where in my opinion Nissans biggest engineering cock up using non servicable uni's.
Glad they got everything else right.

Let us know if you don't know how to check it yourself.
Cheers
