looking to do a conversion on my 1200 ute a12
wanting to do sr20det evently 5 speed

was considering a few different ways to do this, latest one i was looking at a datsun wagon advertised on this site thats sr20 5speed na full running car, will save a lot of messing around as i no ill be able to bolt the straight into my ute. main questions i have is will that 5 speed be ok for det motor? also is it worth me getting a det motor if i have the n/a one ?

I know a bit about the sr20 motors and the n/a motor is nice but if you can go with the det I would say go for it. It has loads more torgue even in standard trim and that gives you peace of mind that you wont break it. Now having all that torque means your gearbox and diff needs to be up to the job because that loads of torque would also cause way more stress than the n/a. If you want to fit the na motor as a start it will be loads of fun for a while till the det bug bits again. But hey its up to you good luck its a hard choice!

For starters it wont bolt straight in your ute. You will need to fit a bigger tunnel or at least widen the tunnel around the bell housing. The wagon needs wiring work so that will carry over to your Ute. Hopefully you wouldnt buy that wagon and start cutting tunnels etc out of it there rare and someone would buy the whole car even if its a rolling shell. If you were to buy the wagon would recommend doing what it needs and engineer it then start on your ute. An SR20DET will be hard to engineer in QLD but maybe possible cause its a commercial vehicle, ask around call Engineers.

the sr20de gear box is singal syncro the sr20det is twin syncro

that wagon needs a lil bit of work and its on the road by pulling it apart, what your gonna grab the crossmember ? sounds like a waste buy the crossmember from maddat or buy n finish the wagon off and after getting bored of the sr20de do a de + t convershion

??? dont think thats right, DET boxes have larger syncros on 3rd/4th (same size as the 1st/2nd ones) and have a funky reverse linkage system. apart from that they are the same as DE boxes, oh and they have a .75:1 5th rather than a .86:1 or something like that...so not really any stronger

oh and cturbosa...why would you just scrap the wagon? if your thinking of the one that 2QK4U is selling, then id be more than happy to fly up there, pull all the SR stuff out for you, put A series stuff back in then drive it away

from owning a heap of silvias i found the box's in sr20de's to get crunchy quick and the resale of the box's is hard to move and very cheap

Of course you can but if you get pulled up by a cop and he is wise to all the rules and regulations he may come down on you hard. You can pretty much engineer anything if you know the right people. It's the RTA that has the final say and that's what people don't understand. An engineer's report can fool the cops if they aren't familar with all the rules but if the RTA find out that you have engineered some huge engine in a tiny car that's when things become difficult. In NSW it's notimpossible just to find a dodgy workshop to keep passing rego for you but you can forget about insurance if everything's not 100% legit.

For example look at all the 13BT and even the handful of 20BT mazdas in sydney etc. Heaps of those are engineered but barely any are done legitly cause you simply cannot legally engineer them anymore. It's called cheque book engineering.

How hard are you looking lol. There are plenty of diff shops in Sydney that will shorten a Borgwarner diff for you. Mine was done in Sydney and came in under the Maddat price, You just have to pick up the Yellow pages and call shops up.

haha so pretty much means that i can drive it but at the end of the day the engineers certificate wont mean much since i wont realy meet rta regulations.. how much did you end up spending to do your diff + wat ratio??

cheers
