Certainly not the early Datsun 1200 versions. Nissan engineers specified the 60-series gearbox for all A14 applications.

That being said, late-model ute 56-series boxes seem to hold up OK, especially if the A14 is a 'worked' one that makes its power at high RPMs (and so has less torque than a stock A14).
