Thanks for the head bolt info. I now have another question

With a head shaved as much as in the pic below, will cold valve clearances be altered from stock?

I've just set mine and the valve train is very rattly

The thickness of the head wont effect what clearance your tappet clearances should be adjusted to. Just set them as per either the factory specs, or as per your cam card if you're running a reground/lumpy grind.

I set em to the stock cold clearance 0.25mm and its makin a bit of noise,

is that likely to be too tight or too large a clearance?

It seems to getting oil to the tappets

Stock is 14 thou hot, or 10 thou cold. (if I remember correctlty)

yeah Gregory's says 0.0098/0.25mm cold but it rattles quite distinctively

I dunno what to do really, I've set em like 3 or 4 times now so its prob operator error more than anything else.

So rattly valves = loose tappets

Got it sorted and re-set by someone who knows whats goin on.

On the plus side, I tried and failed, but didnt bend a valve or worse

so replacing a head gasket is now on my pepsi max list (did it, done it, liked it, loved it)

There is a prob in cyl # 3 either worn cam lobe or rings, its not firing down low in the rev range will do a comp check to see for sure

Ah, you need to know the order to adjust them in. If you're adjusting them when the lifter is not on the back of the lobe, you wont get a proper measurement.
