The 71 series gearbox is a heavy mother but with a cut
and shut or adaptor plate for the A series Im sure many
would not complain.

I personally would like the 71 box for strength and also
I heard there is a 4 speed any idea on this? FS4W71

That would make an awesome and lighter gearbox if you can
fit 1st - 3.32 , 2nd - 2.07 , 3rd - 1:1 & 4th - 0.83
instead of
910 - FS5W71B - same but unique ratios ie 3.32 , 2.07 , 1.31 , 1 , 0.83 , alloy
forks , all Warner syncros .

http://www.trannybuilder.com/store/product.php?productid=5864
https://www.trannybuilder.com/store/pr ... uctid=5865&cat=0&page=520

I cant find any of the ratios for the FS4W71 anyone have them?

I just think the 4th speed is useless when most of the engines
transplanted for extra oomph really require a taller final.

some further info from another forum,....
**
200b is type 63 Basically just a 180 box the one most need is the type 71 being the strongest box we can easily use.
Obviously 71mm between shafts and hence bigger stronger gears.
Type 71 cane as 240 260Z with Porsche servo syncro very expensive to fix.
240K or Skyline with cheaper and effective Borg warner brass type syncros.
ratios varied in type 71 from Z box with 2.9 1st
240K/Skyline/bluebird with3.3 1st - 240/260 C and Z18 Turbo 3.6 1st
You can change the ratios between the 3.3 and 3.6 box by swapping the Input gear sets as this is the only difference.
Z box has the nicest ratio with that 2.9 1st but lousy syncros. These can however be swapped over to the Borg Warner brass syncros by pressing the syncro hubs off the relevant box and swapping them.
Oddball one is the later skylines which had either a short 1600 length type 71 box(no shortening propshafts) or the later FJ or RB box which can be used by just changing the front housing to suit your engine type.
Most of the older people probably know this but we all too often Assume everyone knows about this stuff. This is for the benefit of the newer guys we need more of them. Steve

Why not just use the 71-series 5-speed? They are quite common being fitted to all the trucks.

Mick is that a 63a 4 speed? should be on the case.
Ive though also of using the 180b 4 or 5 speed

Also alot of folks would like a stronger box for their A series
with an overdrive.

I love the old 3 speed a series gbox because 3rd was 1:1
In a 4 speed it would be great to have 3.38,1.7 or 1.8, 1 and 0.7/0.8
this would make a lightweight and versatile box for torquey motors
in lightweight cars.

The 63a 4 speed I havent seen for a while compared to 63 5 speeds and
the 71a 4 speed is rare compared to 5 speeds.

For my ca18 turbo I would like the mentioned ratios in a lighter box if possible.

According to my 86' Nissan U.S service manual. The S12 FS5W71C has two different ratios:
CA20e:
1st:3.321
2nd:1.902
3rd:1.308
4th:1.000

KA24e:
1st:3.321
2nd:1.902
3rd:1.308
4th:1.000
5th:0.759

For the 71B and 71C model trannys with a different 5th gear ratio and all other ratios remaning the same it is nothing more than a simple gear change.
5th gear is a seperate bolt on set and not dependant upon the cluster set of the first 4 gears.

can anyone confirm the
260Z 2+2
1st 2.906:1
2nd 1.902:1
3rd 1.308:1
4th 1.000:1

that would be mad with 5th 0.759:1 from the FS5W71C if interchangeable
