is it legal to not have head rests? ive noticed this company from america called handmade seats co. or something similar and they make these awesome little old skool buckets that look sweet as and i think they suit the old skool nature of the 1200 and would give alot more leg and head room in the utes but they have no head rests. im guessing this wouldnt be legal in a ute?

No ADR, no approval, red defect if the cops see them.
Engineer won't even approve them under a light vehicle mod certificate.

Need to get a local importer/distributor to get them destructively tested and certified. This was the case 5 years ago in NSW.

Even for my sparco seats I had to ring the Aussie distributor for a faxed copy of the ADR testing.

that looks dangerous on the sides, needs some chopped up pool noodles on them. Back to the headrest though, what about running a seat cover that doesn't have provision for head rests and just remove the headrests? test the waters so to speak.

Have you seen the old cobra classic bucket style, they come with or without headrests and have been mounted in Dattos before

yeah im a big fan of the cobras without head rests i love the look... i think it neatens up the interior without head rests but im thinking would they be legal in a ute as in if it was involved in an accident your head could come in direct contact with the rear window.

ZigZag check the 1k seatbelt thread some discussion on headless seats ther ;)
I know what you mean about the look, but in ute wouldn't seem to make as much difference as in a sedan or wagon, and yeah head hanging out the back window might be an undesirable look :/

the seats might be adr approved but the cars adrs will require headrests after 1969 or 1973 or similar. pretty sure on that one

Wish I knew what the seats out of my old ute were from, they were perfect for size and comfort, and I did some pretty long trips in them.
