Dunno too much about Ohms and Peak RMS stuffs but i LOVE my music. And if you use mainly an ipod or mp3 player theese could be ideal, but if you want to fill that ugly hole in yr dash and have the occasional benifits of playing the radio, CD, USB hard drives, watch DVDs or even (heaven forbid) CDs, then it is possible to get a head unit to suit and leave the amps for later.

When I was looking for a stereo to go in the wurzelmobile, I decided pretty early on that most of the readily available ones from JB and the likes, with their crazy pulsing lights and dials would just look like a polished turd sitting smack in the middle of my classic minimalist dash features.
After looking at the number of "retro" Mp3 players available, ranging from the yeah..uh..maybe to the ridiculous, something still had to be done, as there still a butchered gaping hole and no music, looks like Id just have to get a cheapy crappo to fill the void :(
So I gathered up my christmas gift vouchers, went to JB beheld the JVC Kameleon...if you dont want the lights and dials...how about a black rectangle of NOTHING?? yes...yes that could work.
Seeing as it had Ipod and USB input I was toying with the idea of mounting a hard drive in the glovebox, but as I mostly listen to my iphone these days (RIP iriver) I noticed the ashtray was a custom fit for the iphone...so I wired it up, and was pretty stoked with the overall results, It charges my phone and reads the MP3s on it automatically...can even use it as a dashcam/speedtrap detector/GPS. Then when I park, I just take the phone out, close the ashtray and youd never know...
Now If I could just get that dash reskun..

Cant be any Wurz off than that :) off the dial mate
Did you make the hole larger for the unit or used the standard size?
In the second pic, that circle thingy is it vital if I blocked it
with an old chrome datsun logo or badge?
Also could I black out the jvc and other writing on the top or is
there something necessary to be left as an indicator?
I cant quite make it out.

wurzel..
do yourself a favour, grab an early instrument cluster, pull the crashpad out and glue the ally trims onto the dash thats underneath.. looks a treat.... even the recess for the ashtray is pressed into the dash..and it's all in original shiny body colour..

That looks bloody fantastic Scully.

I had my stereo in the glove box and that was the biggest distraction (no peripheral vision of the road at all!)

Nice head unit and all too, I suppose when you turn it off it's just a black piece in the dash?
(Oh, yeah.... just had a better look.)

Top stuff. I'm working on a stereo system too but it'll be a while before it goes ahead.

wurzels stereo and iphone integration is great.

ive left the stereo brigade now and listen to my car- i love it- no music at all.

if you hid one of those ones in the glove box D that you found on ebay- they would be a great budget set up- especially the cig lighter powered one- quality would only be as good as the speakers but it would just be back ground music, not a power house.

Yeah the ebay ones are cheap, maybe the JVC is about 400aud?
If so Id rather spend the rest of 380 on new roof lining and
chroming my bumperettes :)

I had to cut a fair bit out as it had the old square and 2 hole tape cassettes In there, for which the hole was a bit higher , but not really noticable once the faceplates are installed.
I still cant believe it fit...on my 1200 the wiper arms would clip the back of the stereo, so it seems there is more room behind on a 1k dash?

The round part is touch sensitive and lights up when you put yr finger near it so the part where youd want to put a logo is where the volume controls are...the only real drawback on this model as its a bit awkward making circle motions with your finger...i tend to just use the remote.I dont see any reason why you couldnt black out the writing on top tho...who knows maybe this or the next model you could just upload a datto screensaver ;)

BTW, the red missile switch "arms" the stereo as there is no acc on my ignition, so I thought if I gotta have a switch, its gotta be one of those ;)

Dundee...Im having problems visualising what you mean, got any pics? Im not that familiar with the different kinds of dashes aside from this and the coupe... so mine is a later model dash?

Has anyone drilled through thier doors yet to accommodate for stereo/central locking wires? It seems you could fit a nice set of 4 inch speakers in the door without cutting in the triangle recess under the window winder...

Wurzel, That is exactly what i was thinking of doing ... As clyson mentioned the glovebox takes away from your vision, but the ipod dock brings the vision back onto the road ...

How do you guys go with speakers?

I dont want to cut holes in the doors for speakers, anyone mounted them under the dash before?
