What is the best head for modifying/porting?

Is there more meat (smaller coolant jackets?) in a round port or do you start with an oval port as the ports are already larger?
Do you carve up a "rare" GX head over a H89 over a round port?

I am looking to get a head fairly seriously tampered with in the future and if it can be done with a dirt cheap head rather than paying through the nose for a "performance" head like a GX or H89, then I would rather do that.

Yeah I guess so, that's why I intend to get someone who knows what they are doing to do the work.
Just want to get the best base to start off so I don't get a "sorry mate, this head is sh1thouse, you should of really got xxx head" after I have spent $$$ (or more likely $$$$ ) on wasted porting work..
I realise with core shift etc that even the "same" heads are different internally but if I can get the "best" base i.e. smallest coolant cavities, most meat in port walls to start from, I am more likely to get a good result.

Contact SW motorsport and ask about a JTS head, they should be able to help.

He's asking what is the best candidate to begin modifying in terms of suitability in material/structural composition and costs.

Levey, your Jeff Taylor head (Andy's old one) was a modified H89 no? Dean's asking about a budget start I think not a big buck special from Jeff Taylor (although I should say he's really well priced and has a good reputation as a knowledgeable A-Series builder).

Wow, there's a bitta bling! Nice. I thought that was the later Nissan Comp head for a second there! You filled the manifold coolant galleys nicely.
