I plan on re-wiring the car this weekend and im a little confused ... My brother has bought cable, but i think its a little too "thick" ...

We went by the fuse box which says 15A, 20A and 30A ... I have had trouble finding cable to suit so we bought 25A and 50A (assuming that as long as its fused correctly we should be fine) ...

However i was looking under the dash, and i really dont see the point in running 25A (i think 5mm) cable for all the switches etc under the dash ... I understand running the thicker wire for the Headlights and higher current items, but for some of the others im a little unsure ...

Can someone point me in the right direction. Should i just run the thicker cabling for a select few items and thinner for the rest?

If so how thin can/should i go?

I hope the above makes sense ...

6mm cable to power the fusebox and most of the factory stuff is about 2mm.. there's not mush high current stuff,
mabee the Alternator, Headlights, if you want bright lights, and the wipers..

Hey Hamza,

Little off topic but I though you'd like to take a look at this. I think that's your car i it's original condition..... looks like a genuine 67 model so I apologise for insisting it was a 68. It's hard to tell when the indicators have been removed as your next best judgment is the grill and taillights.

Good luck with the wiring by the way, some photo's and progress details would be really appreciated, as I'm keen to do the same thing eventually. Cheers.

EDIT: He also says it was a jap-market import so those Sunny JDM badges would have been appropriate and correct to it's originality.

I don't know about the 1000, but Datsun 1200 uses thick wiring already, for example 14-gauge for the headlights. A 20AMP circuit doesn't need thicker wire than that. Especially with such short wire lengths.

The upgrade would be to use relays and circuit breakers instead of the fusible link. Otherwise Datsun 1200 has hefty wiring already. The same cannot be said of many other cars.

Dundee that was my thought, but i got a little worried thinking "doesnt power pass through most of the switches" ... So if i went with a small gauge i might burn the out ... I think i might be a little over my head here, but i guess there is only 1 way to learn ...

Chris, Champion ... I always thought it was a 67, but the last owner advertised her as a 68 ... Ill def take some pics as i go along ... I still prefer the Datsun badges to Sunny (personal preference) ...

DD, any idea where i can find a wiring diagram using relays and circuit breakers? I dont think there is a fusible link in there at the moment ...

There is a Electric Fuel Pump relay info and Headlight Wiring relay info.

I wouldn't replace all the wiring unless it is burnt, or hacked/ruined by a previous owner.

Thanks, but thats way too complicated for me ...

I was going to replace wire by wire making sure everything is working along the way ... The wiring isnt too bad, but its messy, some wires not connected to anything, others after painted over, some connections are cracked, etc ...

Im not looking forward to this weekend :S
