Heya Guys,

Can someone please tell me if these marks are wear or are they ment to there? They are located as follows:
Cylinder 1 - 12 o'clock (being toward the front of the block)
Cylinder 2 - 6 o'clock
Cylinder 3 - 12 o'clock
Cylinder 4 - 6 o'clock.

They look like wear to me. If it is wear, any idea how they got there?

Cheers guys.

Clay

Those are there from factory. Not wear. Normal.

I think you are refering to the standard machined grooves at the tops of the bores.
I believe they are to help with valve shrouding (for better flow out the valves) A lot of engine builders do this with an die grinder when larger valves are fitted. As long as its only done as far down as the top ring sits at TDC all`s good.

Sumith,

quite often when an engine is rebuilt the mechanic will number the parts so they know where they came from.

Yes, it may have been pulled down to only re-ring it if the bore and pistons were OK. The pistons, rods and caps will all have been stamped with the cylinder number etc..
