What arrangement do people have with their sidedraft A-series Datsuns?

I have my catch can right up the front near the radiator which collects from the rocker and crankcase breather. Normally at idle the radiator fan blows most the extra smoke rising from the catch can filter around and under, but after a a fairly spirited drive when I pull up at the lights there a fairly noticeable (but small) plume of smoke coming from under the bonnet.

I really want to route the line back into the intake but not sure how to do it. I have socks no air box and was thinking of somehow putting some nozzles on the underside of each of the velocity stacks to take a small line carrying the fumes, from the catch can.

Does this make sense? Anyone have a smart little setup? Not too keen on tapping into the manifold but I do want to see some pics if you have done so.

Try plumbing it like the GX setup. fresh air in via the block and vapours into the intake via a PCV valve. Possibly with a drain point in your catch can to drain the oil back to the sump.

Okay what about how much smoke these things put out via crank & rocker? I seem to have a fair bit, Gylezy reckons it's normal but mine is smokey. Not much smoke from exhaust though... what does that mean?

Also it spewed oil everywhere (out of the catch can) and spat the filter off when I flogged it, it's almost like there is no baffle in the crank case, or is this what a knife edge crank does (flicking oil everywhere)?

If I fit a PCV valve should I route it after/coming out of the catch can collection? I don;t want it spewing oil into the induction!

The old girl proberly had a hard time for its age.haha.

HOW TO FIX IT,(or this may enhance the problem,then u need a "bigger catch" can)


*Lift her top (bonnet)
*scratch the head (is she worth it)
*pull it out (engine)
*strip her down (engine)
*do the in and out motion (hone)
*fit some tickers (rings)
*get a good head job (valve service)
*don't forget the rubbers (valve seals)
*slap her bits gently back together (assemble)
*put it back in (engine in car)
*turn her on (start it up)
*gently warm her up (get temp)
*she will be a bit tight (fresh rebuild)
*so be gentle at first (run in)
*after a few good night (gathering kms)
*drive it hard (rev it)
*and after some time it will become loose again (worn out ring/bearings)
*then you operate on it. (rebore/sleeve)
*then tight again (full recon)
*or replace her (new engine)

shouldnt, isnt this your new motor? try a biger catch can.

why would you want your carbs injesting that muck. either tap the manifold or like all 1000's were, just vent to the atmosphere.

Nah this engine is a veteran. Never got around to re-building it, I figured I'd get it running right first so I don't stuff anything up and then bring her up to scratch later on. Previous owner gave it a real flogging.

Gearbox is tired too...... and of course funds are crap.

I'm with BigE, sounds like it's tired..
