Top Dead Center: align the mark on the pulley with the biggest timing marker. The problem is, it lines up at both Top Dead Center (TDC) and Bottom Dead Center (BDC). Here are two ways to
tell the difference:

1. Take off the valve cover. At the mark, if both rockers for number 1 cylinder valves are loose, it's TDC. If one of them is tight, it's BDC, so turn the engine around to the mark again.

2. Disconnect the coil power wire so the engine won't start. Take out the first spark plug, and hold your finger on the opening (don't stick your finger in too far, just enough to cover the
hole). Turn the engine by hand, or have a mate crank the starter. At BDC, a little air will push out around your finger. At TDC, a big whoosh of air will push your finger away. You can
signal to your mate when to stop the starter, then back the engine a little bit back to the mark. Keep your hands away from the crank (of course) at all times.

Hi Hugo, keep with the old Datsun and I think you'll like it as well or better than the Renault.

> how i align the cog whell of the distrubitor whith the groove on the camshaft

This takes a little practice, so just keep experimenting until you sure it is absolutely correct.

1. Make sure the engine is at TDC
2. With the cap on, make a mark on the distributor body where the Number one post is (where the rotor should point to number one wire).
3. Take cap off. Put the distributor in. It will twist a little as the gears mesh, so turn it a little before inserting.
4. Make sure the rotor is pointing directly, exactly, at the number one mark you made. You can move the distributor a little bit to compensate, but may need to take it out, twist it, and put
it back in.
5. Make sure the distributor adjustment/lock bolt lines up with the hole. It should be centered in the slot for adjusting. If you are at one end of the slot, take it back out and reposition
it.

Once the position is right, Make sure the gap is set right. Set it using a thickness gauge or eyeball it. Once running, borrow a Dwell Meter and set the dwell exactly. If the points are
brand new, a thickness gauge is good enough. If they are used, a Dwell Meter is best.

If the Dwell is off enough, it will run poorly.

To skip all this dwell/points business, use a 120Y electronic distributor, coil and electrical wires. For an A12, you only need to swap the adjustment bracket (on the A14/A15 dist.) to make
it work.

Finally, use mario's technique about the spark breaking to set the static timing. I've used this many times to good success.

Hope this helps.

Hugo

I have sent you an email with diagrams and text on installing the distributor.
I hope they help.
