Well the R31 diff is in the coupe and on first drive I am happy with the Ratio.

But man does the bloody thing whine. If you think your wife is bad you aint heard nothing till you have heard this diff.

Noise starts off at reasonable level at 50 and when you get to 80. "Your looking for the ear plugs"

So I gues the question is can these things be re-built? I know they were notorious in the Skylines, even under warranty for diff whine but this is way worse. The diff in question has 400,000 km on it too. Also the housing after a drive is quite hot to the point of not being able to hold your hand on it. Is this normal?

I guess if I go rebuild I might as well look into LSD?

Cheers

Sounds like it's nearly rooted.

Put some oil in it

4.11's were noisy
Yes they can be rebuilt
And if you have a 28 spline one as its the same as Commodore internals you can get spools, lsd's, blah blah

Nah its not rooted it still works

But looking at the re-build kits you only get the bearings, pre-load washer and oil seals. So dont know if that will stop the whine.

Could get whole guts swapped as already got axles to suit and the housing modified. Just need someone to do it for me.

Interested to hear from others who have the R31 setup.

pm ???

Yes it has oil and I know the 3.89 diff is prone to being noisy.

Might ring WA diff center tomorrow and get some more info.

sounds a bit like it needs the backlash set, the tolerance is too tight producing heat and the noise.
But you said it has 400,000km on it, so the backlash should be getting bigger if anything lol.. im not sure

I'd pop the back cover off, pop the axles and remove and measure the shims that are either side of the diff centre. The diff builder probably put the shims in the wrong way.
But if it's an old diff, then anything is possible. Maybe the housing wasn't welded up square when they shortened it.
