Front wheel bearings & Spacers

Just wondering, the guys racing their datsuns that run quite big spacers in the front department, do you suffer wheel bearing issues, as the size on the outers are very small.

Just wondering about this.

I've never done this on a datsun, but some people on locally made cars have tried machining spacer/tubes to fit between the inner and outer wheel bearing. you slowly machine them down smaller by a few thou at a time till the bearing adjustment (with a bit of tension on the nut) is 'perfect' and run the adjustment nut with (hypothetically) 40ft lbs of torque. This spacer helps stop the stub axle itself from flexing, and will keep the bearings more evenly loaded across the full length/width of the rollers.

Obviously it's a lot of mucking around to get it right, but it does make it a little more stable. I'm aware of it being used by some in HQ racing.

I don't think it will be a night and day difference, but I'd give it a try if I couldn't get the bearings to last on a track car. If nothing else, the reduced flexing of the stub axle will mean the wheel won't lose as much neg camber during hard cornering, so you don't have to dial in as much initial (or put another way, you run out of adjustment before getting optimal amounts in some cases, and if the stub axle can flex, it reduces the neg camber under load, so you 'sort of' get more neg camber 'when needed' for the same static setting.
