I got the idea form the homepage of datnet.org, just have a shout box to have a quick chat about anything, ask a quick question without having to make a topic.... just an idea :)

Alot of these sorts of requests go unanswered. I'm not sure if this format will accommodate that though.

It might also involve an upgrade to incorporate something like that, which might be a serious issue considering all the whingeing and whining that happened the last time the site changed.

Would be a good feature. The good thing about making a topic (to ask even just a simple question) is that it turns up in search results. So there is a recorded history.

i just thought the option of going "anyone have 1200 struts in brisbane willing to part with" would be an easier alternative that makig a topic haha, but i get you point aswell :)
