Hey guys, I am new to writing on the forum. I have been a member for a while and reading up whilst saving coin for my project. I have a 1983 Datsun 1200 ute. I am looking for a street legal 2lt turbo. I am interested more in handling over drag strip use. My question is which is the better 2lt turbo for my requirement. I have heard that better horsepower can be made from the FJ20 but the Sr20 is much lighter. I dont want a heavy motor to effect the front end and cause understeer. Does anyone know the engine weights? I have called nissan Aust and my local dealer and Neither can help me out. Happy to be involved with like minded people and learn my way around the site. Thanks.

I am just going through a few things with a engineer and my ute at the moment and a ca18det is the LIMIT to go in a UTE in vic. New rules have come in two months ago ISH and for a engine increse in engine capacity there now is a formula they go buy v's factory weight.

In saying that i would say you can no longer get a 2lt into a ute and on the road! If you want it done by the book anyways

Cheers for that info. I am building and registering in NSW and am unsure if that regulation has come into play here yet. I will get in contact with an engineer and chase it up. I am aware that the CA18det is the biggest engine in NSW for the sedan or the coupe but have been led to believe that you could go larger due to the fact that the ute is a commercial vehicle. I have seen road registered 1200 utes in NSW with both turbo FJ's and SR's. I hope the rule has not changed. Thanks

I like it. Very neat under the hood. I am kind of hooked on the 1200 ute. I had one when I was younger and never had the budget to take it further. I want to have a crack at it now. Its been a while coming. Good luck with your sale. Cheers

sorry to burst your bubble but 1800 turbo is as good as it gets now in NSW . the ones you see on the road now are old conversions , only way to get 2lt turbo now is to buy a existing one

As the other guys have said mate, cant go bigger than 1.8 with turbo. i am half way through a build, in NSW, and even a few years ago when i looked into the SR and FJ you couldn't do it.

Pretty sure you can still get them into a 1600 though, or go non turbo SR, if your set on that engine..

Oh glad i was on the money.... A little more food for thought is...Ca18det into a ute is just passable now for the fact its light commercial. Coupe and sedan are no longer alowed DET just Ca18. Thats vic anyways. The RTA is trying to stop there being any room for movement in the law. Its the formula and thats it!
