ok so tomorrow i am going to remove the timing cover to check my cam timing due to my off idle hesitation and sluggishness that is carried on from 4 different carburettors so i can conclude the carburettors are fine.

so when i open up the cover what should i look for i know theres a mark on the cam and crank sprockets but how should they be lining up at TDC 1 and how can i tell if the cam timing is right or incorrect?

Thanks!

Super easy. Getting the cover off is not, but once off, checking the cam timing is super easy.

just look for the key groove to line up with the dowl hole:

CAUTION: Don't try to line up the match marks. That only works when installing a chain, not after it's been put on and the crank rotated.

It should match up when you rotate the crank until the key is in the position shown in the diagram.

Look at it from above, sighting down along the gear faces.

Turn the engine back a ways, and then slowly forward (clockwise) until the cam dowl lines up with the centerline of the crank. That way the tension of the chain is drawn.

After that is done, look where the crank key is. Does it look like the black line or one of the red lines? It can only be off by a whole tooth, so it will be fairly obvious:

easily way; 10 links from dot to dot, water pump side. dot to be in middle of first link(cam gear dot) then count 10 to the next middle(crank gear dot)link.
