Thanks for your thoughts. No reports of fatalities or serious injuries ( thank God )
Regretfully things are far from being cleaned up, a cheap patch up at best but what is most frustrating is that the rebuild en masse was rumoured to be starting on Feb 1 next year. You can forget about that date now as the insurance companies bury their heads deep into their burrows again...
Cheers
Dave

It was a real tradgedy. We had broken up for the year at work. I was enjoying a spitroast and a cold beer or 7. The first shake didn't actually bother me.
(5.8) I rang some loved ones, and they were fine. But when the 6.0 hit, work packed up the beers, and told everyone to go home. Quite a bummer really.
Then after a lengthy drinking session at a guy from works house, the mrs picked me up. And we went to her mums and I dug all the silt out of her driveway.
With all the dodgey buildings having fallen down already, there's not that much damage this time. Just some liquifaction, and a few blown water pipes/futher damge to roads that were already rooted.

What a shame. Hope the Christmas spirit hasn't been affected too much.

There is a lot of movement along that particular edge. Things have been relatively quite in my hometown (PNG). Even the volcano has decided to stop after a 14year long eruption, wonder what's going on.

All the best, Merry Christmas.

Good to hear everything is relative alright!

Not aware of other western cities sitting right on top! of fault lines like Churchie even Jpns lines are offshore. To learn that most quakes are around 4-10km under is scary.

Hopefully some work occurs for architects in the area of quake resistant construction. In Japan I could never get used to buildings flexing and swaying during 4-5 level quakes but that is the norm there and their buildings do very well VS traditional English architecture. Jpns quake safe Bldings are super ugly but effective.

Apart from a few poor souls in liqufaction prone areas, it wasn't too big a damper on the whole Xmas thing. Although we had 34 aftershocks that 1st night. and ten of them were over magnitude four. Made for a sh1thouse nights sleep.
But we're just getting a few small ones now and again, so life is going on.

Up untill 15 months ago no-one knew the fualts were there. we've always known abaout the Alpine fault. (Which they reckon is overdue to go, and should produce a mag 8) But thats a good two hours west of Christchurch. Although both our islands only exist becuase we're on the convergance of two tectonic plates. Poor old Japan is at the convergance of three!
I'm kinda glad that we're getting rid of all the old buildings. With a few exceptions, most of them were an eyesore imo.
The whole thing has been quite a charater building experience. (and I've been drinking everyday since june. lol)

Where else can you get a nice warn jersey, a root, and a nice roast dinner? lmao

I visited my dads old house today which has been condemned. He's moved 40 mins out of town. It's a real mess. A good foot of silt everywhere. he wanted me to pick up the auxillary outboard from the garage and flush the bores. (The garge has been flooded) The only way I could gain access to the house was by finding the key to the firewood box, and kicking the door open into the lounge. I had the opener for the garage door. but there's so much silt up against it, I didn't even bother trying to open it.

Was your dad's home damaged in the September quake or the one this week?
