I have an A12 I bought in a sunny I got for a song. I pulled everything off it, replaced all the gaskets, and appllied paint to a colour match to factory. (It looks smick too!) I did notice the timing chain was quite worn while I had the timing cover off. Even though I have a chain in the shed with only 500kms on it, (catastrophic engine failure) I chose to leave it alone. (Along with not laping in the valves, or touching anything else) The upside is, that the retarded cam timing created by the knackered chain means the engine will hapily rev all the way to valvebounce. The downside is the idle isn't super smooth. (Although it it a very good starter) And the timing mark isn't uber stable on the timing light. As well as a bit of timing chain noise, that could almost be mistaken for bearing knock.
So it's got me thinking. Have any of you ever experienced a timing chain just give up, and make like a broken cambelt? Probably not a likely thing. I've had A series motors that were so buggered they'd use an entire crankcase oil in only one tank of gas. But as I'm looking at needing to keep this car as a daily for a while, I can't afford for it to fvck out on me.

Double row chains are less likely to fail although I wouldn't rule it out. If the gears looked ok I wouldn't worry about it too much, surely it only rattles at idle. I had a simular thing with an old corolla 5K donk. It ratttled like buggery and it was only a single row.

It was great to catch up when I came to Christchurch. And for the tour. I hope that you didn't get in too much trouble with the missus. I still can't believe just how close you are to all the eastern carnage. Houses in your street are buggered. I also think that most of the population of datsuns of Christchurch are in your street...

I never ever heard of one failing or jumping a tooth. But then again I never heard of one rattling. Maybe it had a lubrication problem.
The A10s had a single-row chain, but Datsun improved them so the later A10s had a double-row chain.

I don't think thats likely. The chain is well worn. However, based on the absence of scum on the valve gear, or black treakle in the sump pan when I rempoved it to replace the gasket. It's safe to assume that this engine has been owned by someone who took the time to do oil changes. I was drinking when I started this thread, and it's not the orignal engine from my sunny. It came from a GB120 ute. When I plucked the rear main cap to make replacing the rear seal easier, there was some noticable wear on the bearing shell. As insurance I ran a half litre of lucas heavy duty oil stabiliser in nthe crank to "help" things along. When the motor is stone cold, if I kick it in the guts, but let it stall from no choke, the oil light stays off for ages before the oil pressure bleeds down. (That lucas stuff is thick as) However, when the egnine has fully reached operating tempraure, if I stall it, the oil light quickly light up. I'm not really worried about it giving up the ghost. However threads of this nature a real good at turning up tales of failue, that otherwise might have come to light.

@revehead, Hey Don, It was real good to meet you too! I neglected to emntion that 5 doors down from me (in the other direction from the gold 910) Is bloke who owns a genuine 510SSS, fitted with a forged Z22et. And around the block from here is another guy who has an SR20det powered 510 too. If you'd had more time, I could have showed you tons more datsuns, and sh1tloads more earthquake damage. In a weird kind of way, I was sort of stoked how blown away you were by the tiny bit of damage I showed you. We've all been enduring it for so long now, that I've forgotten what it's like to live in a city where everything isn't munted. It's a crying shame that I couldn't unleash the supercharged fury, and show you how an A15 is supposed to go. Maybe next time aye!

I've fallen in love with the NZ shop Global Culture as well as Speights Beer. The T shirts that explain the local slang are a pissa. I nearly came home with a Munted T but unfortunately the didn't have a 150XL for me. After I met with you I spoke to plenty of locals that said pretty much what you said, that only the shu(i)t buildings came down... I haven't been to a place in years where prople haven't lost their sence of humanity. You can actually talk to people and they talk back without constantly looking at their watch or being impatient. I took some good pics of some of the damage, and duckies too.
