Hi guys, firstly I will mention that I am a complete newbie when it comes to cars, turbo cars in particular :( so it looks like im going to have a huge learning curve infront of me.
I am mechanically minded as far as motorbikes are concerned I can strip a bike down to the frame and rebuild it no trouble, but I am just getting into modified cars.
I figured a older car like the datto ute would be a firly straight forward project car.
Body work I can do I have a old corolla which I am doing a bare metal respray on and sofar so good, but like I said am a bit lost with turbo cars, I did consider putting a N/A engine into the ute which would obviously be alot easier and cheaper but I really want a turbo.

So I have spent the last few days looking into what I would need and what needs to be done to the ute, so im hopeing that if I make a list of what I have found some of you nice experts may fill in the gaps to what I have missed out.
I decided to go for the CA18DET because it looks like a popular engine choice so im thinking their should be plently of info regarding them.
Here goes,
Engine & Box
Engine mount kit (Maddat)
Turbo & turbo manifold
Will need to get some exhaust work done
Waste gate ??
Oil catch can??
Boost controller
Oil cooler??
Intercooler
Computer
Need to get wireing loom modified for computer (Maddat)
Need to get trans tunnel modified as mines a manual (maddat maybe)
I should also imagine that im going to have to move the battery to the back of the ute.
Also expect I will have to do somthing with the air filter

The ??? marks are for things that I think I might need but not sure of.
Also going to do some suspention work but I will wait until I have the CA18DET into it to allow for the extra weight.
I think thats about if for now guys, have I missed anything out?
Thanks
Andy

Welcome, diff upgrade and brakes! Depending on how much you want to spend and if you want to street/track your car!
There is a lot of info around when it comes to ca18det conversion and many of smart minds that can help along the way! I say it doesn't hurt to ask!
You'll also get some smart ass's along the way (hi mik) :) and some ppl that will advise you on how "your" car should be, at the end of the day it yours and depending on how far you want to go depends on you!
Also all 1200 utes are manual :)
Waste gate depends on what turbo your running, the pros of external waste gate is being able to hold more boost and it makes the setup more tuneable!
As for oil cooler if you plan on doing track days the ca18det have a small oil problem when hitting corners and fast/slow downs as oil surge can cause bearings to crap them self, I'd go winged sump and be looking into oil cooler if you choose to drive it hard and fast! (thanks for the reminder I gotta find one for my setup) :)
And oil catch can you is an easy fit and also allows you to keep an eye out if you are getting blow by or having any boost related problems causing motor to pressureise
That's my 2 cents

You should decide on what your car is going to be used for, I got 178hp atw with upgraded front mount, cold air intake, upgraded exhaust on stock boost, so there's plenty of power to be made, but remember the car is very light and loves to get up and go when the turbo comes in

OK thanks for the info guys :) So it sounds like I have a fair idea on whats needed for the build.
I am definatly going to have to look at the brakes & diff but that will not be until I have my head around the engine and get that installed & running.
I am going to try and do everything myself I think I am going to need a hand with the welding of tunnel and exhaust and getting a final tune ect.
Thanks
Andy

Hey andym1, Make sure you have the money to finish the project because that's where most people stall and have to sell up. It is alot easier and cheaper to buy a car already built. But hey its your car/project and this forum/members can always help in some way.

Yep I have done the same myself with project bikes before now, I think that I am going to buy the parts and wait until I have everything and then take the ute off road and start the build. until then I am just going to concentrate on the body.
