4speed front case stuck (F4W60)

Does the front case come off an A14 4-speed w/o removing the rear extension first?

I took out the large snap-ring that holds the front bearing in, removed the eight case bolts, then knocked case loose from the adapter/sandwhich plate, but it will only separate about 8 mm.

Remove the switch in the case and it will come off. You don't need to remove the rear case first.
