hey guys, i was just wondering if any of you guys have heard of somebody doing a 6 speed swap to their datto? either supra 6 speed or if your stateside one out the the newer camaro/firebird/trans am. i was just curious was all. definitely on my wish list for my car but i'm not sure how much of a reality it is.

that would be awesome just for the wank factor of saying "1200 datsun with a six-speed" . if ya find a way do tell, im guessing it would not be to easy though. kinda like going sequential, now that would be good

It's already been done.... We tried a Quaife 6 speed behind our CA16 race car . We had been running a Quaife Ford Sierra 5 speed set up and the 6 speed was for a Lotus but used the same casing. The ratios were ultra close and it was a bloody awesome box to use. The motor and trans were sold off when the car was wrecked in a huge shunt a few years back. The beauty of the Quaife gear was it was relatively inexpensive and it was'nt bulky. The Supra and Borg Warner gearboxes are fairly hefty.

really now? hmm.. by inespensive how much do you mean? LOL and can i find one stateside?

how much power can the quaif handle? i know that the supra and camaro 6 speed boxes can handle quite a bit before they give out. it always nice to learn about new options. like i said the idea of a 6 speed tickles my fancy but for now i don't think its in my fututre

The new S15 nissan 200 sx with sr20 turbo has a 6 speed so if you where to buy a front cut and stuff the lot into a 1200 would make for an interesting package would be pretty $$$$ conversion though as most really late model stuff is.
Cheers Andrew

On the SR20 front I enquired with NZs best known Nismo agent Reg Cook and he quoted NZ$6000.00 for a close ratio Nismo gearset fitted into a casing. The Quaife option will be about half that price but you'll need to make or adapt a bell housing.

Me mate may have the option to buy a Quaife equipped A15 1200 race car - what extra could he expect to pay over the same car with a toyota 5 speed which is another option? i.e What is the Quaife worth?

A few years back they were around 3 grand for the gearset. I just had a look and Quaife still offers them but did'nt show a price. Just for sheer bragging rights and psyche value I'd go for the Quaife option over a dirty old Toyota box any day.....
