Hey guys
Currently doing the ute tray. I have stripped to bare metal kbs rust sealed it and primed over the top. There is no rust.

My tray is very dented and rough finished everywhere though, im considering using filler to smooth out all the imperfections.

Can anyone see any issues with this? Would it crack or fail in the tray area? Would I be better leaving the rougher but sound finish?

If it's applied properly and there isn't a whole lot in 1 area it should be ok.obviously to get the best finsh ud be better of replacing the panel.but if you can bash the dents out then smooth them it should be ok

yea getting biggest dents I can out but there is lots of little dents all along the lower sections of the tray ribbing everywhere.
Previous owner did some dodgy stuff

whats the thickest/max amount you can use at one location?

I'm pretty sure you can purchase this panel as a replacement part, the panel will just need to be drilled and welded back in. Brand new i think i remember they were wanting 900-1000 for a nissan one?

Or checkerplate....

If you bog and maybe throw a decent rubber mat over the top, i would think it'd be ok, but would surprise me if you had bog begin to crack not long after doing it, especially if you use the tray. (ie, not long being within a few years...)

as the tray isnt rusty and is structurally sound, I'm not prepared to replace it with orig one or checker plate. I have spent hours stripping and then KBS rust sealing it.

Its purely ascetics.

Sorry stock1200ute1 I cant understand what you have written, are you saying its likely to crack or you think it will be fine?
I will be using the ute as a ute so the tray may get a work out. Theres a upol raptor liner going in

Yes, when carrying loads in it, thick filler is likely to crack. Even 1 mm thick is too much I would think.

Thick primer is for minor flaws. Filler (bog/bondo) is for larger flaws and is totally good unless put on too thick.

Exactly what dd said.depends how good a finish your after.if you are putting the rhino liner you can probably get away with bogging dents the liner should hide any imperfections I'd think

My concern is how high build and/or filler will survive under the raptor line if I use the ute as a ute.
Its not carting bricks or anything but will be loaded from time to time.

If the fillers will crack off or chip away easily under the raptor I'll just raptor straight onto the rough primed metal. If it will wear well I'd like to do a rough smooth of some of the dents

This is me starting to apply KBS
