hey guys i need some help on the barkes on my coupe
i know that 180B wagon disc brakes are a very simple swap for the drums on the rear of the 1200, but what about the front?
i need to sort out the brake situation before i go ahead with an engine swap, as i dont want to die.
so my question is what are the simpliest brakes to fit to the front of a 1972 Coupe? (obviously they have to be better brakes, quite noticably better that is as i am planning big Horse Power very big HP.)

Hey cfwase,

Welcome to the www.datsun1200.com site.

Fill in your registration properly, so we know where you are from. Otherwise information is pretty useless if you are on mars!

Chris.

But quickly... A10 stanza lowerarms, balljoints and radius rods. get some 180B big axle struts. And ship them (And your original 1200 struts off to a brake conversion guy to put 1200 springs perches, springs, verada disks and commodore calipers. They are only single piston..but man they stop fine.
A LA/LB Lancer booster and master cylinder helps.

My dad does the front strut conversion in Castle Hill Sydney. robert@shoeys.com

DBA Part Num. 425
Dia. = 276mm
Thickness = 24mm

You can also get the disks slotted from DBA for a little more cost.

You can buy them with/without mounting holes drilled. In the beginning (which seems when I choose to do things) You had to buy the disks from Mitsubishi Spares. The ABS ones were cheaper than the non-ABS ones, but thanks to aftermarket volume sales, the price has come down considerably, and you can buy them over the counter at any spares place.

There's a bit of work, I guess the following will explain.

Shopping List
180B big axle struts -> $100 (Wreckers)
180B master cylinder -> $20 (Wreckers)
180B brake splitter -> $10 (Wreckers)
180B front brake lines -> $10 (Wreckers)
Lancer LA/LB Booster + Mount -> $25 (Wreckers)
Commodore Calipers (VN/VP/VLTurbo) -> $50
New Mitsubishi Verada KR/KS/KE/KF/KJ Front Disks -> ~$350 (DBA). I paid $230 each.
New Brake Pads -> $50

Total Parts Value $600.

extra -> Might want to get new 180B strut inserts if the ones from the wreckers are no good -> $180

Requires machine work on the disk and hub to get the offset 100% correct.

Requires spring cups to be exchanged with 1200 /120Y struts. I've found a use for the old drum struts that most 1200 owners have in the back of their shed from the last brakes upgrade. If you can do without your car for a little while, you could use your existing struts for the spring cups and springs..
eg.

Some other fella online has a verada disk upgrade, I think it's 1600 (510) related but still relevant.

Here's a pic again in case you missed it in my last posting.

Hope this helps.
Chris.

G'Day Ben,
Where are ya from ?? So you have disk's on your ute. Arnt you happy with them or just after a change?

I also have a ute but with front drum brakes and they suck big time !! I havent had it long and its the first car Ive had with drum's and Im not real impressed with them .

The main prob is the 1st time use the brakes they grab and pull the ute to the right. I ajusted the front & rear as described in my workshop manual and it still does it , but after a while they warm up and it doesent do it ,.

Any idea's ??

Anyway getting back on topic would you be interested in selling your gear if you do a upgrade ??

Regards
Andrew Shaw (amshaw)

"i know that 180B wagon disc brakes are a very simple swap for the drums on the rear of the 1200"

Can anyone explain in a little more detail what is needed part by part and how it is done? 1200Rallycar, have you done this on your h165 yet?

Cheers
Simon
