Hi guys and fellow Datsun builders! I am new to the forum. joined a while back. but only got time to ask a few Q`s and maybe get some answers from you professionals out there. I have a fairly good condition 1972 datsun GX wich i bought and want to make all good again. This will be a toy to me and a show off piece. What do you suggest, Go old school? or new school with all bumpers and side skirts and stuff... the guy i bought it from changed from round lights to square ones, wich i dont like...and some other stuff... i will attach some pics for you to see..

colour... Like
Headlights ... NO Like

recommend starting with brakes and suspension. Best to have something solid than flashy

old school for sure..

For a Gx it does not have a gx bonnet :(

A lip spoiler would look nice..

But as demacoz has said don't go pulling it apart straight away go ahead and get the brakes suspension and some simple engine mod's like dual carburetors for better performance, are you going to stay with the stock engine or got idea's for somethign else

if you want a show off piece start looking at other datsun 1200 coupes to get an idea what you want from your car and what makes you happy we can give suggestions but at the end of the day its your car

If you want something old school go check out some JDM datsun's or look at the tomei 1200 coupes iconic japanese race car

GX used the standard bonnet
* early 1200s used a flat bonnet
* late 1200s used a bulge bonnet

Open in new window

Hey, Thanks for the replies, i decided to go for the old school look as well (thanks), Demacoz and Loosekid, thanks for the info, the suspension was upgraded already by the previous owner, he replaced the whole suspension with the one from a nissan 1400 truck. like the one i drive also, i will attach a pic for you to see.
I got the old school grill with new round lights for the GX... bought it from my good friend who lives next to me, also driving a yellow GX.( will put up a pic). for my GX, it has a a14 in with issues on, little smoky engine, had a few hard days. what motor do you suggest for my car or should i go rotary turbo, 4agZe or even maybe 3sgte, i want to have a turbo engine that will be strong and make good power.

If you are wanting to go ahead with an engine swap for reliability and power there are alot of swap's you can do but it comes down to how you want it..

In my opinion find the cheapest and easiest swap so you are not sitting there for months with the car off the road, for reliabilty and performance go with something fuel injected where you can just go ahead turn the key and it starts everytime..

The A14 is a great engine and with not so much cash you could have a great engine with some awesome power (even fuel injection can be done) or do some simple work and do a draw through turbo setup

Most engine swaps people have done are generally Sr20 and ca18 swaps mainly because parts are a plenty, you can buy straight up tunnels, cross members, ect (everything for the swap from maddat or other resources) and in doing the swap if you have any questions or queries there is alot of documented information on this website and guys whom have done the swaps that can always give you a helping hand.. If you went down the line of a rotory you must think that it does need alot of maintence and parts are few in many now days and cost alot for upkeep..

if you went down the lines of a ca18 swap makes around 120kw for example a simple turbo upgrade (t28 high flow from a S15) and minor headwork can get 200kw (260hp) on like 15psi then have a eco boost controler to flick a switch run 6-8pst and still be a reliable car.. going from the like 69hp that your a14 has is a big difference

but in saying this you must take into consideration you still need gearbox, tailshaft shortend, new diff and shortened the swap itself could cost you upwards of $10,000 unless you can do alot of the fab work yourself

end of the day its up to you on what you want and how much cash you are wanting to spend

Thanks for all the info loosekid, i wil have a look at the swops our fellow datsun people has done, i have a a15 in my truck wich produces a nice 117hp on the rear wheels. Wich is fun and was a lot of hard work. I went the efi way with throttles from the 20v corolla and much more.... so for the gx, i want to go turbo because i have my truck and i will mostly use the gx for shows and drag racing that is the reason i baught it.. So u suggest something in the line of sr20 or ca18? I will do some homework and check wich way i can go. I actualy like the 3sgte. But ya, lets see what is the best and the most power. Do you know some one with a 3sgte in a datsun? Maby i can get in touch and see if it is worth it or just go for something else... all the people around here i know goes for the sr20det, that is the reason i want something else.... its to common around where i stay.
