Hey guys, I'm starting a build thread for a supercharged A12. At the moment i am just going to be putting toether ideas and gathering info. This is my first engine build an dwant to do most of the work myself. Ill just edit this with more info as I collect more. Any thoughts and suggestions are more than welcome. I want this to be a reliable daily motor, so not going to be trying to achieve and crazy HP. Heres what I have so far:

Engine: Early A12 out of my 74 120y, not sure what has been done to it but but used to rev to 8 or so grand on a few in the wet burnouts haha

Supercharger: AMR500, driven at 2:1 ratio. I'm hopefully going to build the valve train to handle 7-8000 rpm so it will spinn the charger to its redline

Supercharger drive: Gilmer? Would be nice, heard about crank pulley bolts snapping though. Would I be able to run alternator supercharger and water pump all of the one pulley? If not twin v belt drive, maybe single.

Carburetion: Hopefully draw through SU type. I have a set of twin SU's of a SSS 180B, hoping to use one of them. If not ive got a downdraught 32/36 weber i can use.

Inake: Hopefully custom manifold, if not will be making an adaptor to a standard manifold.

Exhaust: Extractors and 2 inch exhaust single muffler.

Fuel Supply: Standard pump and lines should suffice.

Head work: 8000rpm valvetrain in mind. heavy duty double valve springs, lightweight push rods (not sure if worth it), some slight porting work to get it flowing a bit better. Maybe bigger valves (have to research what alternatives there are, and whether or not ill really need it) metal head gasket for peace of mind. ARP head studs.

bottom end: really don't want anything failing here, and I know the standard bottom end can hold up a bit of boost. toying with the idea of forged dished pistons (price pending). I was thinking of boring and stroking, but I think the AMR500 will be pushing it to try and boost anything bigger than a 1200. will be happy to keep it standard if it will hold up.

cam: standard?? have researched into "supercharged" cams but im sure there will be some advantage with a custom cam grind.

oil pump: I see bprojects have heavy duty oil pump springs, any idea if this is a good idea if going for a higher redline?

cooling: just a bigger 3 core alloy radiator, maybe lose the fan and install a thermo?

thats all for now but will keep updates coming.

josh

Josh maybe just focus on using your engine as it is, if in good condition.
Heres the the car that I got a twin shaft front and back pulley alternator
Would suit a custom inlet manifold mounted setup & reduce all plumbing.

Yeh the motor will need a pull down and inspection as it has been sitting for 3 years under a tarp in the weather. more than likely something has seized up on it. so if im pulling it down would be a good idea to replace a few things while im going. I don't mind doing the work its all learning after all.

The alternator your talking about, are you indicating mounting the charger on the same side as the alternator, as opposed to the inlet/exhaust side?

that would be a lot neater

sorry thought you had the earlier engine which has alternator on the in/ex side which does make it easier to mount supercharger on a side draft mani and pulley running off the back of the alternator back pulley.

ahh ok d, 90% sure its on the alternator side, what year until was the alternator on the exhaust side? this came out of my 74 120y, hadnt checked engine numbers, maybe it was a later engine put in? or 74 is considered a later engine than what your refferring to?

1973 came with alternator on left side, down low
1974 came with alternator on right side, up high by #1 spark plug

The plans/suggestions sounds spot-on to me. Look forward to see the progress on this build.

Stock '13' bolts are strong enough for a 2.4 liter engine. But if you have the '12' or no-mark bolts by all means upgrade them.

thanks for the info man, much appreciated.

didnt get a chance to get the engine up on stands this weekend. hopefully during the week.

been having a read on pulley ratios and from what I can gather 2:1 ratio would be a good starting point. can order pulleys off this guy i hope: http://www.kemotorsport.com/

thanks

This might be the only type of pulleys you will need if you can get the Mazda 626 wavecharger alternator model.
