Hey fellas,

I have a few parts that I want chromed.

They are the srtips around the bonnet and front fenders, the wipers (yes i know legalitys), and is it possible to repair the slightly crack rear light surrounds and rechrome them?

Has anyone done this kind of things, where and how much?

Any help or advise is appreciated!

Hey there

I think that it is possible to repair the (metalic) light surrounds and rechrome them. Around here you can rechrome a metalic bumper for something lige US $50.

The fittings around your bonnet should be stainless and the headlight trims. They just need polishing. There a a few companys in Oz that do plastic chroming, have a scan though the Aussie hot rod mags at your bookshop for some numbers...

you can do them yourself with that autosol metal polish..my 1000 headlight surrounds and grille look great now. i find it works best to start of with some kitten water based rubbing compound car polish and then finish up with the autosol for best results.

I scraped all the paint off my trim pieces with a piece of aluminum. Stainless steel and chome are harder than aluminum so they wont scratch, but the paint will chip off. I used a file to sharpen the aluminum when it went dull.
Now, don't scrape the paint off like a gorilla or something will surely get scratched. It comes off pretty fast.

I'm not 100% sure but if you check it out with RTA I think that you might find that chroming the wipers and such will be legal for your car because it has chrome bits on it originally.
I think they only have a problem with it if you have a car that didn't have any chrome on it to begin with.
I have heard that some hotrods and older cars can have chromed bug catchers and cups on the guages on the bonnet because of this loophole in the law.
Still, not 100% sure so try and find out...

You can paint strip the moulds then polish them, will save a bit of time, but can get messy.

There is a place in Girraween called the bronzing studio who can chrome your parts for you. They can even chrome plastic. I have heard they do a good job but a bit pricey. I suppose you get what you pay for.
cheers
Kel.
